With admit rates dropping below 10% for its most competitive schools (like Stern), NYU looks for students who demonstrate extreme proficiency in their chosen field, whether that is quantitative fluency for Business/Engineering or a standout portfolio for the Arts.

Demonstrated Interest & "Why NYU?"

NYU cares deeply about yield. Your essays must articulate exactly why you need to be in New York City (or Abu Dhabi/Shanghai) and how you will utilize the specific resources of your target school.

Test-Optional Policy: NYU has extended its test-optional policy through the 2025-2026 application cycle.

Test Flexible: If you choose to submit, NYU is highly flexible. You can submit the SAT (mid-50% is roughly 1450–1570), the ACT (32–35), 3 AP Exam scores, the IB Diploma, or predicted A-Levels. NYU super-scores the SAT and ACT.

Early Decision I: November 1

Recommendations should highlight your maturity, independence, and ability to advocate for yourself, as NYU is a large institution where students must be proactive.

NYU values "Action Leadership" in the real world. Internships, starting businesses, significant community impact, or high-level artistic endeavors stand out more than standard high school clubs.

Leverage Early Decision

NYU fills a significant portion of its incoming class through EDI and EDII. Applying ED is the strongest way to signal interest and boost your chances.

Maximize the Test-Flexible Policy

If your SAT is borderline but you have three 5s on AP exams (including Math for Stern/Tandon), submit the APs instead.

Nail the Supplement

Avoid clichés about "loving New York." Focus on specific professors, institutes, and professional opportunities that NYU uniquely provides.

NYU is for the independent, street-smart, and ambitious student. If you want a traditional enclosed campus with football games and a central quad, NYU is not for you. If you want the city to be your laboratory, NYU is unmatched.
