Career-Backwards Planning: Future-Proofing Your Degree
Most students choose a major based on their favorite high school subject. "I like Math, so I'll do Engineering." This is a recipe for a generic career. At Pericles, we advocate for Career-Backwards Planning.
Step 1: Identify the Problem. What global problem excites you? (e.g., The energy crisis? The ethics of genetic engineering? Financial inclusion in developing markets?)
Step 2: Identify the Skills. What skills are needed to solve that problem? (Data Science + Public Policy? Biology + Computer Science?)
Step 3: Choose the Major. Now, find the degree that gives you those skills.
Example: A student passionate about "Sustainable Cities" shouldn't just study Civil Engineering. They might look for a dual degree in Urban Planning & Data Analytics. This makes them uniquely employable in a future where smart cities are the norm.
Don't just pick a major. Pick a mission.
