Early Decision (ED) vs. Regular Decision (RD): The Strategy

January 30, 2026 6 min read

Early Decision (ED) is a binding agreement: If you get in, you must go.

The Pros:

Higher Acceptance Rates: Colleges fill 40-50% of their class in the ED round. Acceptance rates can be 2x or 3x higher than Regular Decision.

Demonstrated Interest: It proves to the college they are your #1 choice.

The Cons:

Financial Aid Trap: You cannot compare financial aid offers. If their aid package is too low, you are in a tough spot to negotiate.

One Shot: You can only apply to one school ED.

Strategy: Only apply ED if (1) You are 100% sure it's your dream school, and (2) Your family is comfortable paying full tuition if necessary (unless the school is Need-Blind).
